I love this!

I don't think it's healthy to treat a dog like a child, it suppresses a natural side of them, but it's their own fault. I mean look at his face! They're also simultaneously the most hardy (look at a dog with three legs, they don't care) and the heartbreakingly fragile, the way they look at us with pure love could make me weep.

They're the best people I know and the way they live in the moment, as you hinted towards, is a great lesson in these neurotic times.

Thanks Dean! It is a struggle, but I think as long as we're all in on the joke, it's ok (that's what I like to think anyway!)

I love this article! Very observant about lovely Rupert, how we all adore our pets. The photos are great especially the one of Porky, Bess and Chloe-what a trio!

Ha, this is spot on. I shun the whole 'fur baby' shtick whenever I encounter it. But then I also share a steak with my dogs on their gotcha days, so who am I actually kidding?

This is the dilemma! You know what to do: pop them outside in the kennel for the night to redress the balance 🤣

Think my wife would see me outside in a kennel before either of the dogs!

As it should be!

Pearl doesn't like other dogs and hides behind me when there is another dog about. No dog park for us! She loves people though. She has this amazing ability to pick out people who like dogs. If a woman (it's always a woman!) makes that what-a-cute-dog face, Pearl will run over and lay on her back to get a tummy rub.

Pearl can pick out the word 'pub' in a paragraph of speech and comes out with me every night. Every visit to the pub is an endless stream of ladies — "Can I pet your dog?". I wish someone had told me about this when I was 23!

This is so sweet! Pearl sounds very intelligent. I love the combination of self preservation, craftiness and directness that dogs have for getting things just their way.

If I am sure of anything in life, it’s that if of dog is being treated well, it’s deserving of it. I want to grow up to be the person my dog thinks I am.

Yes I know what you mean. It’s possible to bring out the best in each other

Love and identify so much with this piece, Faith! I too dislike the term "fur babies" and often found the dog park a challenge, depending on the behaviour of my dogs/their dogs, and people you wouldn't normally associate with, but have to speak to for 20 mins, just because you're all standing on the same patch of grass! (Plus, you might be the only other person I know, other than my mum and I, who did that squish thing with the fleas....🙈) As you say, in our defence, we only had 4 telly channels back then....😀

Thank you so much Sharon! I’m glad it’s not just me and also glad to have come across a fellow squisher!! Perhaps it was an early form of meditation, I often felt relaxed afterwards!

What a lovely comment thank you. What an amazing thing to be able to do - and to manage that bird / cat dynamic so well :) Animals are just so rewarding whatever the species (you should get a dog though!).

Thanks so much for reading.
